About

Growing Mathletes: STEM of Baseball in Informal Settings is a project that integrates sports, math and science concepts, and growth mindset for youth in grades 3-8 underrepresented in STEM fields. Growing Mathletes builds on existing partnerships with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Boys and Girls Club programs. The Growing Mathletes project seeks to expand and refine Science of Baseball activities to integrate growth mindset experiences that focus on the value of effort, determination, and learning from mistakes in both athletics and STEM. Additionally, we are developing a professional development model that includes in-person and on-line training to support the implementation of the Growing Mathletes program in either afterschool or summer programs. Growing Mathletes will be implemented in Tucson, AZ, Santa Ana, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and Kansas City, MO. The project will produce a set of sequenced activities for informal learning settings that highlight STEM concepts in baseball and the power of growth mindset in both athletics and STEM as well as professional development materials for training youth development staff in each informal learning setting.
